Parmesan Oven Fries Recipe For the Budget Cook

December 12th 2008 05:26
These parmesan oven fries are delicious, healthy and cheap! Plus, they go great with homemade veggie burgers.

----------------------------- ----------------------------- -----------------------------

PARMESAN OVEN FRIES

YIELD: 6 SERVINGS

Ingredients:

- 4 large potatoes, peeled
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup parmesan cheese topping
- Vegetable cooking spray

Directions:

1.) Cut each potato into french-fry sized strips. Pat dry with papertowels.

2.) Combine thyme, pepper, salt and parmesan cheese in a plastic (ziplock) bag. Shake to combine.

3.) Spray fries with cooking spray. Add a few at a time to the bag and shake to coat with spices and cheese.

4.) Arrange fries in a single layer on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 30 minutes or until desired crispness is acheived, in a 450 degree oven.

TIPS:

You can use shredded or grated parmesan cheese for this recipe but the powdery parmesan "topping" works best.

You'll probably have to use more spices and cheese than the recipe calls for if coating in a plastic bag. I simply add more as I need it. (I like my fries VERY seasoned.) Use as much or as little as you like.

SERVING SUGGESTION:

Serve with homemade veggie burgers. What else? They are also great dipped in barbeque sauce but you don't NEED anything extra as they are perfectly seasoned already.

BUDGET METER:

$1.65 - 4 potatoes
$0.02 - 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
$0.01 - 1/2 teaspoon pepper
$0.01 - 1/2 teaspoon salt
$1.25 - 1/4 cup parmesan cheese topping
$0.01 - Vegetable cooking spray
----------
$2.95 - Recipe Total

$0.49 - Price per Serving

Compare that to greasy, unhealthy fast food fries!

NOTE: All prices are calculated based on the least expensive ingredients available to me locally. Your price may vary slightly but should give you a good idea of what you're facing.
