Make Your Own Breadcrumbs and Save Money

December 10th 2008 04:58

In my previous post, I detailed a veggie burger recipe that calls for breadcrumbs. You can save a few bucks if you make your own and it's surprisingly easy to do. It's also a nice alternative when you don't want to run to the market just for breadcrumbs.

----------------------------- ----------------------------- -----------------------------

HOW TO MAKE BREADCRUMBS

Ingredients:

Fresh or stale bread slices

Directions:

1.) Remove crusts from the bread slices. Tear slices into 1-inch pieces and place on a cookie sheet.

2.) Bake the bread pieces in a 300 degree oven for 5-10 minutes, or until dry and lightly browned. Allow to cool completely.

3.) Place the bread pieced in a food processor or blender and process until desired consistency is reached. For most purposes, a fine grain is recommended.

TIPS:

Use any type of bread you have on hand to make breadcrumbs. Rye, sourdough, wheat, white - it doesn't matter. They will all work for recipes that need breadcrumbs.

If you have a loaf of bread that is stale or about to spoil, make a batch of breadcrumbs and store them in an airtight container for use in recipes. Store in the refrigerator for longer shelf life.

----------------------------- ----------------------------- -----------------------------

BUDGET METER:

$0.25 - 4 slices of bread
-------
$0.25 - Recipe Total

Compare that to $2.00 or more for a container of pre-made breadcrumbs!

NOTE: All prices are calculated based on the least expensive ingredients available to me locally. Your price may vary slightly but should give you a good idea of what you're facing.

Hi -- I've sent you an email already but sometimes they don't get through. Would you like a domain for this blog? If so send an email to charles -at- orble.com (change the -at- into a @) and he will be able to set one up for you.

You may also need to add the email address admin -at- orblemail.com to your address book in order to receive Orble admin emails in the future.

Thanks,
Jon.
